360-degree-view from the top of Germany
High above the clouds, surrounded by infinite freedom, you’re greeted by a breathtaking 360-degree-view. With 2,962 m (9,718 ft) above sea level, it is the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains as well as the highest mountain in Germany.
A walk across the summit terrace is a great experience in good weather. If it is clear enough, you can see not only Germany and Austria from up there, but also Swiss and Italian peaks. Over 400 mountain peaks can then be seen!
Adventurous visitors can try out several sledging options on the Zugspitz Plateau as well (even in summer!) or go go skiing or snowboarding in winter.
Every year, a small but beautiful igloo village is set up on the Zugspitzplatt. You can spend the night there and get a lot on offer. There is an ice bar, a whirlpool and delicious fondue evenings. Even if you don't spend the night in the igloo, you can still see the elaborately carved structure inside for a small fee.
The Zugspitzbahn station is a 10min walk from the Hideout and located right behind the general station. The cogwheel train of the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn BZB that commutes between Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Grainau - Eibsee - Zugspitze is the perfect way of avoiding the traffic jam, which unfortunately forms regularly. You can decide whether to get off at the Eibsee and continue with the gondola (faster) or stay seated and go directly to the Zugspitze (more relaxed).
It is best to park directly at the Eibsee, in the large car park in front of the cable car valley station. During the ski season (from around November to 1 May), you should either be there as early as possible - ideally before opening - or alternatively in the afternoon, when the first skiers are already leaving. The ride with the brand-new, spacious cable car takes about 10 minutes to the summit. From the summit, the glacier cable car then takes you back down the other side to the ski area about 350 metres below.
You can take the "Eibsee" bus directly from the Hideout (Rathausplatz) to the Eibsee. Due to traffic we don't really recommend this option as it can take a long time (40 minutes without traffic).
Of course, it is also possible to climb the Zugspitze on foot. Here, too, there are numerous possibilities with various difficulties. We will be happy to give you tips for the right route or organise an appropriate mountain guide.
