A jewel in the Werdenfels region
It was formed when the Isar-Loisach glacier retreated, leaving a depression that filled with water. With its clear, turquoise waters, it is quite rightly considered one of the most beautiful and purest lakes in the Bavarian Alps. It is delightfully embedded in the rocky landscape at an altitude of 1,000 metres. 2.40 km long, 850 m wide and up to 32.5 m deep (depending on the water level), it has eight islets dotted around its northern side.
You can walk around the Eibsee lake, which takes approximately 1,5- 2hours (7.2km, 402m ascent) or explore the Eibsee on your own with the pedal boats or rowing boats at the boat rental (you will find it fastest when starting to walk counter clockwise). Do not forget your bathing suit in the summer – the mountain lake offers a pleasant cooling on hot days. If frozen on winter, you can walk on the lake itself as well (on your own risk of course).
The cogwheel train of the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn BZB that commutes between Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Grainau - Eibsee - Zugspitze is the perfect way of avoiding the traffic jam, which unfortunately forms regularly. The Zugspitz railway station is located just 300m from the lake and it takes 30min to reach it from the BZG station Garmisch. This station is a 10min walk away from the Hideout and located right behind the general station.
By car , the Eibsee is only 15min away from from the Hideout via Grainau. There are available public parking spaces from 5:00 to 22:00 for a fee.
The EIBSEE bus commutes between Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Grainau and Eibsee - the bus stop is just 100 meters from the lake. The starting bus stop “Rathaus” is just one minute walk away from the Hideout. You can find the schedule here.
